Grosvenor celebrates the 50th anniversary of Skärholmen Centrum

Grosvenor Europe (Grosvenor), one of four operating companies of the privately-owned international property group, Grosvenor Group, has celebrated the 50th anniversary of its Skärholmen Centrum shopping centre in southern Stockholm.

The retail-led mixed-use asset was opened in 1968 as a community centre for the newly built Skärholmen neighbourhood. Activities on September 8th 2018 celebrated the centre’s longevity and significance to the local community, with events ranging from fashion shows to performances from renowned local music artists. The day was also a time to recognise those in the community and awards were presented to those who have contributed their time and effort to supporting others.

Grosvenor’s vision for the centre is to further establish Skärholmen Centrum as a natural meeting place for the people of southern Stockholm. This is achieved through refreshing the tenant mix (80 new lease agreements have been secured in the past two years including H&M's new concept Afound), and through refurbishment projects (the most recent initiative was the introduction of Marknadsstråket (Market Street), a new pedestrian link between the centre's food stores and the rest of the mall.)

James Raynor, CEO of Grosvenor Europe, comments: "What sets us apart in Stockholm is our commitment to working with the local communities in which we are active, delivering a lasting and positive legacy. Skärholmen Centrum was celebrated for its contribution to the local community when it first opened; providing a city centre style destination. Our goal is to strengthen this identity so that the centre will continue to flourish as a city centre.”

Carl Strufve, Managing Director, Sweden, Grosvenor Europe, adds: “Since the acquisition of the centre in 2015, we have committed to delivering extensive renewal and reconfiguration work, preserving existing community facilities such as the Red Cross and library, but also introducing a new food, beverage and leisure offer for the benefit of tenants and visitors.

“This has been delivered in line with our Living Cities philosophy, which guides us to make investments which contribute lasting commercial, social and environmental benefit in the communities in which we operate.”

Grosvenor first entered the Swedish market in 2011, acquiring assets in 2011, 2012, 2015 and 2018. Their latest acquisition, Lidingö Centrum, brings the total number of assets owned and managed to six. With a current gross market value of SEK 9bn (as of end 2017), Grosvenor is also considering potential residential zoning across its portfolio.
