Providing meals and safety checks to the elderly
We’re supporting Meals on Wheels San Francisco deliver much-needed meals and provide safety checks for vulnerable seniors.
Meals on Wheels San Francisco (MOWSF) deliver over 2 million meals a year to 4,700 homebound seniors in every neighborhood of San Francisco. In addition to meals, they also provide daily safety checks for seniors to reduce the risks associated with loneliness, depression, and falls.
A vast majority of the Meals on Wheels recipients struggle with underlying medical conditions like diabetes, heart disease, and compromised immune systems, which can make them particularly vulnerable to diseases.
Since the shelter-in-place order went into effect on March 17, MOWSF’s new clients have risen by 20% each week, resulting in a need for increased meal production from 8,000 meals a day to over 10,000 meals a day.
In an effort to get funds to those hit hardest by the Pandemic, Grosvenor placed $25,000 with the organization, which has helped them to employ extra cleaning protocols, open two additional facilities, obtain PPE and sanitizer products for staff and volunteers, redesign their entire delivery routes, design a new menu. MOWF’s also been able to increase client assessments by 200%, implement a virtual safety check program for the most vulnerable clients, and prepare shelf-stable boxes of meals that can last a client for a week in the event of staff shortages.
Please consider supporting MOWSF’s COVID-19 emergency response efforts and help ensure no senior in SF goes hungry or is forgotten.
“We really could not continue to serve the volume of clients and safely without support like yours.” – Salena Bailey, Director of Development Operations and Annual Fund, Meals on Wheels San Francisco
