Rebuilding the connection between people & places

Somewhere along the way, we have become detached from the places we inhabit. The houses we build, the neighbourhoods we live in, the villages, towns, communities and suburbs we make up: the landmarks of our lives are in a state of disrepair and the relationships and institutions that hold them together are fraying. It is time we rebuilt the connection between people and the places they call home.

Forgetting to feel

Few things in life are as tangible and meaningful as the place where we live. Big events in the wider world broaden our outlook. But they also seem to magnify the importance of what’s on our doorstep.

Can we shrink the space between communities and developers?

Grosvenor Britain & Ireland has launched ‘Positive Space’, a community charter setting a new standard for public engagement in the way that places are created and managed.

Corporate Indifference or Social Responsibility?

As a social activist running a residents’ association in south London, I recently got involved with a major national infrastructure project. Naïvely, I imagined that my lifelong experience could be useful in promoting mutual understanding and helping residents. But after five years of frustration and total impotence I’ve now given up in despair.

Inside-out development

One day in the summer of 2005, I ventured into a passage off Rye Lane in the middle of Peckham town centre. I live 10 minutes walk away. I went to find out about a large site in the borough development plan which was at the time subject to public hearings. The site was designated for total demolition and redevelopment.

Powerful, confident communities

Whatever the long-term impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, the decade ahead cries out for a huge programme of housebuilding, new infrastructure and regeneration.

In an age of Covid-19, will the new London Plan help communities?

In case you missed it, Sadiq Khan wrote to Robert Jenrick last month, confirming his team will work with MHCLG to hammer out a compromise on the new London Plan. Officials in City Hall and MHCLG will now sort the crucial wording. The Mayor then publishes the final version. The Secretary of State approves it (claiming victory). And at long last all statutory notifications go out before the election campaign is up and running.

Community, Trust & Managing London Neighbourhoods

London needs closer bonds between landlords, residents and local businesses if its neighbourhoods are to change for the better.

Making engagement engaging

Community engagement seems to be having a moment. Property group Grosvenor is launching its Community Charter; Centre for London last year published its report into Trust, Design & Community Engagement; the London Society itself is addressing the topic through the ‘Public’ theme of its 2020 events programme; and many forward-thinking local authorities are creating new roles for cross-disciplinary community engagement officers embedded in their planning team, in my own case at Waltham Forest.

Grosvenor submits application for sustainable development in Belgravia

Are you listening carefully?
