Grosvenor commits to ConcreteZero

Commitment to use 100% net zero concrete by 2050 follows SteelZero pledge

Grosvenor has signed up to international non-profit Climate Group’s initiative ConcreteZero, joining a range of other businesses in a commitment to use 100% net zero concrete by 2050 and meet ambitious short-term commitments to use 30% low emission concrete by 2025 and 50% by 2030.

In addition to the pledges to move to a Net Zero concrete future, Grosvenor and other ConcreteZero members have committed to measuring and reporting on the carbon emissions associated with the concrete they use. This data will enable the industry to define what low emission and net zero concrete is, bringing clarity and enabling collective action.

The announcement builds on Grosvenor becoming one of the founding members of SteelZero in 2020, a global initiative aimed at driving market demand for net zero steel and transitioning to procuring, specifying or stocking 100% net zero steel by 2050.

Grosvenor’s UK property business has some of the most stretching environmental sustainability targets in its sector. Think Zero, its net zero pathway, commits it to reducing emissions across all scopes by at least 52% by 2030. With supply chain emissions accounting for almost 50% of the business’ carbon footprint between 2019 and 2030, working with partners committed to net zero will be a critical success factor.

By 2030, the business expects 40% of its supply chain by emissions to have a Science Based Target and, from 2023, does not intend to award contracts over £1 million to partners without a Science Based Target. To date, Grosvenor has worked with a third of its supply chain to achieve a Science Based Target through its Net Zero mentoring programme.

James Ennis, Director of Project Management, Grosvenor said: “We are delighted to be a founding member of ConcreteZero and work with our partners towards a net-zero concrete future. As part of our commitment to be net zero by 2030, we are transforming every element of our business, including our approach to construction. Today’s announcement builds on our membership of SteelZero and the work we are doing with our supply chain to drive down embodied carbon across our developments.”

Jen Carson, Head of Industry, Climate Group said: “By launching ConcreteZero we’re doubling down on our efforts to get the highest emitting industries to net zero. Steel and concrete production together emit the same level of CO2 as all road transport globally, and with demand for both going up, this is only set to increase. Targeting the concrete industry was therefore a no brainer. Adding ConcreteZero to our industry programme enables us to continue to push the construction and property sector along its path to net zero.”
