My Name Is

Eve Bellers and Natasha Forde, Joint Co-Chairs, Race Equality Network

A name is more than just a word; it carries meaning, heritage, and identity. Getting names right is a simple step towards fostering a culture of inclusion and respect. When people feel heard and valued, they are more likely to feel a sense of belonging – both in the workplace and beyond.

This Race Equality Week, we are launching our #MyNameIs campaign, which was created by the organisation Race Equality Matters as a solution to ensure the correct pronunciation of our names. For many, name mispronunciation is not just an occasional inconvenience – it can be an ongoing challenge that affects their sense of belonging. No one should feel pressure to change or shorten their name just to make it more ‘convenient’ for others. By making the effort to learn and use names properly, we reinforce that every individual is valued for who they are, not just for the work they do.

That is why we are encouraging colleagues to take steps to normalise name pronunciation, whether it’s through phonetic spelling in email signatures, name badges, or simply asking and listening when meeting someone new. When we take the time to get names right, we create an environment where people feel comfortable, respected, and empowered to bring their whole selves to work.

However, we recognise that achieving equity, diversity and inclusion in the workplace goes far beyond this campaign. At Grosvenor, we are working to ensure that our workforce reflects the diversity of the communities we serve. We are reducing barriers to recruitment, retention, and promotion so that opportunities are open to all. We are equipping our employees with the confidence and knowledge to have meaningful conversations about race and culture while highlighting behaviours that demonstrate allyship and advocacy that can make a tangible difference to our culture.

Race Equality Week is a moment to reflect, but our work does not stop here. This is an ongoing journey, and it starts with each of us. Let’s take this opportunity to celebrate the richness of our diverse identities and ensure that everyone’s name is spoken with care and confidence.
